Whisperwood August Bass Tournament daily results
« on: August 19, 2017, 10:00:16 PM »
Day 1 - Saturday, August 19, 2017: Our week long tournament is off and running with mild temperatures in the 70's and light winds.  Whisperwood Mike got things going with a 14.5 inch smallmouth bass but last year's smallmouth bass champion Brandon Kohler had other ideas and quickly took the lead with his 15.5 inch smallmouth bass.  You can check photos and updates at www.Whisperwoodlodge.com

Day 2 - Sunday, August 20, 2017: It didn't take long for this tournament to catch fire with a definite "big fish" Sunday.  Adam and Ned Shackett joined the tournament today and as usual this father and son combination quickly got into the tournament action.  Adam had a terrific day with some quality bass and Dad Ned added a 21 inch largemouth bass to take the early lead in that division.  This 5.5 pound bass will be tough to beat, however, it usually takes a 6 pounder to win this tournament.  We will see how the week goes.  Paul Kaufman added a beautiful 19.5 inch - 4.25 pound largemouth bass and our other Father and Son team, Bob & Brandon Kohler also had a big day, with Dad Bob getting a quality smallmouth bass and Brandon upping his smallmouth bass lead with a 17.25 inch smallie and an 18 inch largemouth bass for good measure to add to Sunday's outstanding total.  Whisperwood Mike thought he had a winning bass but was disappointed when it turned out to be a 28 inch pickerel!  Let's see what Monday has to offer - stay tuned.

Day 3 - Monday, August 21, 2017 (Solar Eclipse day) Another beautiful day at Whisperwood and the big fish keep coming despite a short darkening in the skies this afternoon.  Whisperwood Mike added a 17 inch largemouth and a 16.5 inch smallmouth but they were not enough to take the lead in either division.  Ned keeps his streak alive with another impressive largemouth and we added two more anglers to our tournament.  Adam continues his catching ways but no big ones today and Bob and Brandon Kohler could not increase the lead either with no big fish recorded for the day.  All fish photos are posted on the 2017 August Big Bass page.
           Current leaders:
Largemouth Bass Division:  Ned Shackett    - 21 inches
Smallmouth Bass Division:  Brandon Kohler - 17.25 inches

Tuesday weather looks warm and sunny - let's see what the Whisperwood anglers can do.

Day 4 - Tuesday, August 22, 2017: Bob Kohler fished with Whisperwood Mike after breakfast and son Brandon went fishing with Ned and Adam to mix things up a little this morning.  Bob immediately caught a nice 16 inch largemouth bass while doing well and catching several other fish and Brandon added his fish catching skills to the Shackett boat.  Ned and Adam continued catching their fair share while Ned lost a "big one" at the boat on his drop shot rig.  Whisperwood Mike added some small fish and the usual abundance of pickerel for the day.  There was no lead change today.

          Current leaders:
Largemouth Bass Division:  Ned Shackett    - 21 inches
Smallmouth Bass Division:  Brandon Kohler - 17.25 inches

Wednesday forecast looks good and time will tell if anyone will be able to challenge the leaders.

Day 5 - Wednesday, August 23, 2017:  After rain showers at night the morning cleared for another beautiful day at Whisperwood and the tournament anglers responded with some outstanding fishing.  There were two lead changes as Adam Shackett tied Brandon Kohler for the smallmouth division and Ned Shackett increased his lead in the largemouth bass division with a giant 23 inch - 7 pound largemouth bass.  Both Adam and Ned used jigs for their impressive catches.  In some of the other action, Brandon was in Whisperwood Mike's boat and Ned joined Bob Kohler in his boat this morning and all added some more bass to their totals but could not take over any of the lead categories.  A special thanks to Bob Kohler for his outstanding video of an eagle swooping down to carry away a very large pickerel.  This video will be posted on the Whisperwood page within the next week.
The real action today happened after dinner as the 17.25" smallie and 23 inch largemouth bass were caught as well as Whisperwood Mike's 16 inch smallie and Bob Kohler's multiple 16 inch largemouth bass.  Butch from Kentucky was in Mike's boat this evening as they were bringing in their last cast a giant unknown fish slammed Butch's lure right at the boat, completely bent his fishing rod in half as the line snapped and the lure was left floating at the boat's side.
          Current leaders:
Largemouth Bass Division:  Ned Shackett - 23 inches
Smallmouth Bass Division:  Brandon Kohler and Adam Shackett - 17.25 inches

Very impressive numbers and great catches, however, there are two more days to go and history shows that these tournaments have been won during the last day.  Stay tuned as we head into Day 6.

Day 6 - Thursday, August 24, 2017:  Happy Birthday to Ned Shackett, a long time Whisperwood guest and with his 23 inch - 7 pound largemouth bass caught yesterday, he now joins the exclusive Whisperwood 7 pound Big Bass Club.  Another beautiful day at Whisperwood with blue skies, puffy white clouds and variable winds. Doug McCafferty joined in the fishing festivities today and joined up with Whisperwood Mike for some morning and early afternoon fishing.  They caught a few frisky Whisperwood bass and enjoyed the day on the water.  Bob and Brandon Kohler added a few more bass and Brandon landed an 18 inch largemouth today, but far short of Ned's leading 23 inch bass.  Adam Shackett caught some big bass and photos will be posted when received.  With all the bass caught there were no lead changes.
          Current leaders:
Largemouth Bass Division:  Ned Shackett - 23 inches
Smallmouth Bass Division:  Brandon Kohler and Adam Shackett - 17.25 inches

Friday is the last day of the tournament and the awards ceremony will be held Friday evening at 8:00 pm at the camp fire.  Let's see if someone can undo any of the leaders tomorrow - it has been done many times before so stay tuned for the final results tomorrow evening.

Day 7 - Friday, August 25, 2017: The final day of the tournament was another beautiful Maine day with light winds, temperatures in the low 70's and blue skies. Adam's 21 inch largemouth bass was a beauty but fell 2 inches short of his Dad's 23 inch giant. Bob Kohler had a giant smallmouth bass on his line, however, this big smallie threw the hook at the boat and will forever be his "big one" that got away. Many more Bass were caught by our Whisperwood anglers but no one could surpass our current leaders. Congratulations to our 8 competitors and the complete tournament page will be posted within the next week.
              Final Results:
Largemouth Bass Division:  Ned Shackett - 23 inches (7 Pounder)
Smallmouth Bass Division:  Brandon Kohler and Adam Shackett - 17.25 inches

... and just for good measure .... Bob & Ned were out early Sunday morning and Bob's solid 3 pounder was a fitting end to our tournament week.
